A lot has changed in the previous quarter of a century in the area of AIED, or Artificial Intelligence in Education. We ask ourselves, "What are our major strengths?" twice a year as we evaluate our achievements and plan for the future. Also, what kind of fresh chances are coming our way? We identify the focuses and typical situations that fill the area of AIED by analyzing 47 publications from three years in the Journal of AIED's history (1994, 2004, and 2014). In light of these findings, we propose two lines of inquiry that, taken together, will shape educational policy over the next quarter of a century. The first line of inquiry is an evolutionary one, with an emphasis on present-day pedagogical methods, teacher collaboration, and the diversification of technological and domain-based tools. In the alternative, we propose a game-changing method of integrating our technology into the daily lives of students in order to better serve their communities, cultures, practices, and aspirations.
